As a member of The Arts Society North East Essex you will be able to attend 10 lectures a year.  Additionally, we arrange ‘Days of Special Interest’ for smaller groups of members looking at specific topics in more depth with an expert in the relevant field.

There are also several visits arranged each year to interesting places (for example historic houses, museums and galleries), as well as longer tours both in the UK and abroad.  Charges for days of special interest, visits and tours depend on cost.  Numbers are limited but members are notified of details well in advance and have ample opportunity to apply early.

Our membership year begins on 1st January and our Annual General Meeting is held in February.  The 2019 subscription is £40.

Lectures, which last approximately one hour, take place at JobServe Community Stadium, Colchester, at 11 am with the exception of the April, May and June lectures which take place in the evening at 7.30 pm. Coffee is available from 10.15 before morning lectures and the bar is open from 6.45 before evening lectures.

We currently have 300 members and there is a waiting list for new members. For a fee of £5 per lecture those on the waiting list, as well as members' guests, may attend lectures.  Please pre-book by contacting the Membership Secretary a few days in advance, as the number of visitors may be limited for some very popular lectures.  Our Membership Secretary Margaret Porter can be contacted on 07751 833789, or via email:

If space allows, waiting list members may also join in the Days of Special Interest and Visits.  On these occasions the organiser for each event should be contacted .  Full contact details will be available on the relevant page.

Membership of North East Essex gives you membership of The Arts Society (the national ‘umbrella’ organization) and as such you may get discounts at certain galleries and exhibitions on production of your membership card.  You will receive a copy of The Arts Society quarterly magazine which, in addition to a number of interesting articles, gives details of many of these exhibitions and galleries.

You will also have the opportunity to play an active role in the preservation, conservation and promotion of our artisitic heritage.  Visit our Heritage Volunteers and Young Arts pages for more information.

Gift Aid    Through the Gift Aid scheme, The Arts Society can claim tax back on subscriptions.  Our Society in turn receives £1 per member registered for Gift Aid.   To complete a Gift Aid declaration form please contact our Treasurer via the Contact Us tab.

Affiliate Membership    Available for anyone who would like to be part of The Arts Society but is unable to commit to regular monthly lectures.  It costs just £10 per year. For full details visit The Arts Society website.  Affiliate Members are very welcome to attend any of our lectures for a fee of £5 per lecture.  Please contact the Membership Secretary a few days in advance to book a guest place.
